| Sept - select surgery date of Dec 7 Nov 10 - 1st autologous blood donation Nov 17 - 2nd autologous blood donation Nov 27 - pre-op physical with primary care physician Dec 3 - pre-op meeting with Dr Bernstein; pre-admittance to Peninsula. Dec 7 04:30 - alarm goes off Dec 7 06:00 - arrive at Peninsula surgery center. Change into gown, get into bed. Admitting nurse takes details, confirms right hip. Shaves and signs surgery site. Chuckles at "NO" on left hip. Dec 7 07:00 - Dr Bernstein arrives. Has decided to use X3 polyethylene for liner. Dec 7 07:15 - Dr Holzclaw discussion anaesthetic - spinal + light sedation. Dec 7 07:30 - wheeled off to surgery, given a snood along the way. Dec 7 09:50 - surgery over; Dr Bernstein gives recap and thumbs up. First incision at 08:15; closed up in 90 minutes. |

room; wake up; get recap and post-op
x-ray of hip. Twice, since the first one seemed to have overwritten
someone else's. Tubes for spinal, IV, catheter, drain are in place.
Adductor pillow straps to legs. Compression stockings and foot pumps
put on. Waiting for feeling to return in surgery leg. Dec 7 13:30 - taken to room 2544. Completely awake; no pain. Dec 7 17:00 - "feel good" wears off. Fatigue and mild nausea set in. The truck has hit. Dec 8 08:45 - remove drain Dec 8 08:45 - First physio therapy (PT). Attempt to sit up. Fainted! Abort. Start exercises: ankle pumps; calf; quads; gluts; heel slide; adductor slides. 3-5x per day. Dec 8 15:00 - Second PT. Success at sitting up (solo). Declare victory for day. Dec 9 08:00 - PT. Walk halfway down main hall with walker. Sit in chair. Another trip in hall later in afternoon. Dec 9 19:00 - First bowel movement! Dec 10 06:30 - remove catheter and IV Dec 10 08:30 - true walking (with walker) down width of hospital. PT visit. Training for stairs - crutches and cane. Switch to crutches from walker. Dec 10 09:15-12:15 - blood transfusion, one unit (cold!). Keep walking, exercising. Dec 11 - prepare for release; kill time Dec 12 11:15 - released! |
